Field day provides wide range of information for producers

ARDMORE, Okla. — The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation and the Jack County Extension Office will provide valuable information for farmers and ranchers with cattle operations at an upcoming Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Field Day.

Hosted by South Campsey Cattle Company, the BQA Field Day will begin at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 19, at the Jack County Fair Barn in Jacksboro, Texas.

During the field day, Noble Foundation consultants and Jack County Extension agents will provide presentations about cattle handling, vaccinations (types, handling, administration, timing), recordkeeping, dehorning and castration.

After the presentations and lunch, participants will travel to the South Campsey Cattle Company where they will take a pasture walk, review prescribed fire techniques and discuss how to survive wildfires. Participants will also receive hands-on BQA procedural demonstrations on topics ranging from vaccinations and branding to dehorning and castration. There also will be a demonstration about low stress cattle handling.

"The BQA Field Day offers quality, up-to-date information for new and veteran cattle producers," said Robert Wells, Ph.D., livestock consultant with the Noble Foundation. "This is an excellent opportunity for all farmers and ranchers to refresh their skills in handling cattle, as well as learn some invaluable information that may improve their operation."

The Beef Quality Assurance Field Day is open to the public, but it is limited to 30 participants. Those individuals who are in the Texas Beef Quality Producer Program will earn three Beef Quality Continuing Education Units (CEU). Cost to attend is $10.
